Reiki and Western Medicine

from Kimberly Frost, RM

I'm not a witch doctor.  I don't even care about curing.  It's quality of life that interests me and I am not alone.  Collectively, we are demanding more from our health care providers.  No longer interested in having my clinician simply manage my symptoms, I want consistent, superior, knowledgeable health care that encompasses the best of modalities.  I'm not interested in alternative medicine.  I want what's natural.

Reiki is natural.  It is as natural as a woman in Kenya standing over a burning bush as its smoking flames rise beneath her skirt.  A Westerner might shut his eyes and scream Voodoo after witnessing such an event.  The New York Times might capture the picture and compare social civility.  Another poor soul might say she is crazy or sexually extreme.  On the contrary.  Women in Kenya stand over the burning Myrrh bush for it's anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, and cleansing properties.  They are aware, long before Western science agreed, that nature provides medicine.

We forgot that for awhile.  Now, as our health care paradigm shifts from the one disease, one treatment method toward a more well rounded approach in healing, we are rediscovering the power in natural modalities that lend themselves to our goal- wellness.  We are exploding into empowerment.

Introducing beautiful arts like Reiki into our health care, shares how it has been practiced in various ways for infinitum, with an efficacy all its own and as pronounced as any treatment.  At the same time, we must not dismiss medicine altogether and ignore great leaps in science.  That would be as foolish and backward as the last paradigm.  Rather, a blend of East & West offers the most potential to lead us into a dynamic and exciting world of health.

A respect of each practice is demanded.  The old and the new, the natural and the man-made, the scientific and the spiritual, all must be honored equally in order to apply appropriate tools to considered circumstances empowering both patient and provider.  That is health care.  It's the world of health care I want to be involved in and encourage you to expect.  It's where we are going.
